Information and Academic Policies for

CLASS REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS

ATTENDANCE:
1. Every student is expected to attend and be on time for each class. The student cannot properly assimilate the material presented in a class if he/she is not regular in attendance.
2. If a student is absent, it must be for illness or other unavoidable reason. The teacher can excuse a student if he deems the absence unavoidable.
3. Should a student miss more than 3 classes, he will be dropped from class even if he/ she has an excused absence.
4. Three (3) tardiness equal one absence.
5. One point will be taken off the student’s grade for every unexcused absence.

GRADING:
1. The minimum passing grade is 70%.
2. The teacher will inform students of all assignments for which a comprehensive grade will be based on the first day of classes. This would include memory work, reading, keeping a notebook, tests, and other things assigned by the instructor.
3. No incomplete grades will be given. A student will either pass or fail.

ASSIGNMENTS:
1. All work is to be turned in at the beginning of the class on the due date.
2. The instructor will determine the due date for all assignments.
3. A grade of "0" will be given for any assignment not done on time.
4. If a student is absent, due to unavoidable reasons, on the day an assignment is due, he is responsible for contacting the teacher to explain why he/she is absent and for getting that assignment to the teacher on the very next class period.
5. No late work is to be accepted past the last day of the term.

TESTING:
1. Tests are to be taken on the day noted by the teacher on the first day of class.
2. If a student is absent for legitimate reasons (to be determined by the teacher) he/she may take the test the next class period when the student is in class.
3. Notes from missed classes are to be secured from a fellow student. There are no retakes on tests.

FEES:
1. The tuition fee for any class is a nominal token sum.
2. There may be additional expenditure for books, and course materials.

ACCREDITATION:
1. Most of our Christian schools give credit for students who have completed their course work and have received a certificate of graduation from our schools.
2. Each University makes the determination of the amount of credit they will give to students based on their own policies and the students’ grades. Usually they require a grade with a minimum of 70% but some schools might require 80%.
3. SIBI cannot guarantee any transfer of credits, but most students receive over 60 hours credit in our Church of Christ Universities.
4. Other universities will grant less and in some cases no credit.

EXPECTATIONS:
1. Expectations on workload vary with the students’ abilities and background.
2. For night school, students will need to spend 1-2 hours for every hour in class.
3. When the school goes full time, the requirements will increase; as will the assignments students have to do.

Venue and Accommodation

The existing Bible classrooms in PPCOC will be used for the School until the need arises for dedicated premises. Under this approach, facilities that are vacant most of the weekdays can be deployed more productively.

As and when the need arises for foreign students to live in Singapore for study purposes, housing arrangements will be made for the period of each course. Any such need that arises now will be considered on a case-to-case basis.

The SIBI-PP School Board

The board comprises:

Winston Chong, Board Chairman –Winston’s background in business and accounting enables due consideration to be given to the School’s viability in Singapore. Serving as an elder also provides him a vantage view of the congregation’s needs that may otherwise be unnoticed. His responsibility and involvement ensures that the elders of PPCOC are kept fully appraised of key developments pertaining to the School’s establishment.

Kuek Lee Hock, Member – Lee Hock’s tertiary education at Harding University, USA places him well to appreciate the demands of the courses. This would enable him to present a clear picture of the rigours SIBI’s courses have on its students.

Dorothy Tay, Member – An educationist by profession, Dorothy has brought invaluable perspective to the programme’s perception by students. She has also been key to overseeing the logistics and material requirements for the School.

Paul Quek, Member – Paul’s background in IT project management and his continual approach of getting “back to basics” and first principles has helped keep many discussions pragmatic and true to the original intent.

Lau Kin Fatt, Member – Kin Fatt is the minister of the recently planted Puchong Church of Christ in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Together with Kok Bin, their input will shape the involvement of Malaysian students who have an interest for in-depth study of the Bible at SIBI.

Ong Kok Bin, Member – Kok Bin is the minister of the Seremban (Malaysia) Church of Christ. His involvement ensures that Bible study needs of churches in the outlying areas of Malaysia can be adequately considered.

SIBI was established in 1962, and for many years was also known as the Sunset School of Preaching at Lubbock, Texas.

Since 1962, more than 4,000 certificates of graduation have been issued for several ministry disciplines. Among the graduates are over 2,000 gospel preachers and missionaries who have lived and ministered in all fifty states of the USA and 110 foreign nations. Graduate studies in missions have been offered since 1970 to those who have completed their basic ministerial studies. More than 600 missionaries and 50 mission teams have been trained and sent out through the SIBI Mission Department. A 1987 survey revealed that graduates of SIBI have been used by God to produce over 200,000 conversions, plant 1,500 new churches, train 3,500 preachers and appoint 1,650 elders, all to the glory of God.

In 1974, the Sunset School literally became a “school without walls” when the Sunset Extension School was started. The courses of the School were recorded on tape and arranged for correspondence study. Through the last 33 years, thousands have enhanced their ministries by taking these courses. Some 150 students have received graduation certificates through this program.

The ministry training curriculum of SIBI is also available in a distance-learning program through audio, DVD and VHS video. Currently there are more than 360 Satellite Schools in 47 states and in 18 foreign countries, with an estimated student body of 8,000+ audit and credit students enrolled and studying each week. Approximately 900 of these students are currently taking courses for SIBI credit.

The International Studies Division of SIBI presently maintains relationships with 47 Ministry Training Schools in 31 countries over 6 continents, and is assisting additional schools that are in various stages of starting up. In South Asia, SIBI schools are present in South Korea, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia; courses are conducted in English, and translated into the local language. The school in Singapore will be taught entirely in English.
