INTRODUCTION

As I reflect to write this testimony, I’m awed by how the Hand of God moves through my life. He was with me in the beginning but I did not realize. God was patiently knocking at my door but I did not answer. The length of time it took me to respond to a loving God makes me cry “Lord, thank you for your wonderful grace and mercy” My life begins at 6am on 29th March 1950. As a child, I was always falling sick, think I almost died. My parents, both teachers, have 4 children. I am the eldest son, and also the first grandson –an important status in the Chinese tradition. I was borned into a Christian family and grow up in a Christian environment.

I am the 3rd generation Christian. My father grew up in Amoy in China before he came to work in Singapore. He told me that my late grandfather will always wear special Sunday clothes to worship God and in those days, theirSundays are always packed with activities.

As a baby, I attended the kindergarten at the church in Singapore. My mother taught the Sunday school. I sang in the choir. Church activities were part and parcel of my growing years. My late grandmother who was widowed at a young age. My grandfather died before I was born. She had a great influence in my life. I always remembered her as a virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. She single-handedly brought up my father and helped to take care of the grandchildren. She was hardworking and would toiled from morn to dark. A typical day for her would be to do the laundry early in the morning before going to the market, then to work in the school canteen in the morning. By afternoon, she prepares lunch, meet tai-tais (rich women) and sells them jewellery, cook dinner. In between she would go to the church kindergarten to chat with the pastor and pick the grandchildren. She would pray, tithe and attend church faithfully.

GOD’S GENTLE REMINDER

During my studies in the UK, I encountered an incident which stayed on in my mind for a long period. I joined the Glasgow Christian Chinese Fellowship (GCCF), a group serving the needs of all overseas students. I was asked to invite the university department head to give a bible lesson on a weekday. That day, on my visit to the professor’s office to invite him, he spoke with me for an hour about baptism. This was God’s reminder that I need to understand baptism. I tried to find the answer by asking the church I was attending but there are many unanswered questions which I’ve decided not to pursue on.

HOW I CAME TO CHURCH at PP

Many years later, after I was married and working , Adrian & Doreen Teo invited my family to their church camp. As a visitor, I attended most of the church camps organized by the Church of Christ at PP. It was in one of the church camp in Awana that Allan Ashurst taught me that I need to obey in baptism.
