Myanmar Mission Trip 21-24 Jan
by Deacon Paul Lim
Background on Myanmar: Burma was officially known as Myanmar in 1989. It is the 2nd largest country in SE Asia by land area and their language is Burmese. It was under British administration from 1886–1948 and presently under military rule. Their national currency is Kyat. Main religions are Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. Yangon is no longer the capital. The capital is now Naypyidaw. There are 14 states in Myanmar.
Transportation is expensive in Myanmar. A 30 year old car cost USD 15,000. The official price of petrol is S$4.24 per litre. In order to pay this official price, there is usually a long queue for petrol. The black market price for petrol is S$5.93 per litre.
Our mission team comprising three men and six VBS teachers, arrived on 21st Jan at the Yangon International Airport. One piece of our luggage was chalk-marked “X” which means it will be thoroughly checked by the customs. Nevertheless we went through without problems and into the warm welcome of our Myanmar brethren.
We conducted a seminar, one preaching session at 8mile COC and another one at Than Lyin COC together with VBS. There were many non-Christian visitors during the worship at Than Lyin.
When sister Winsome visited us during the June camp last year, she has requested for a VBS for children in Than Lyin and 8-Mile COC.
Conclusion: The trip was a fruitful one. The VBS was well received, the children were well behaved, enthusiastic and paid 100% attention. The seminars, visitation to Sam’s place and the Churches at 8 Mile and Than Lyin were good experience for us and encouragement to the Myanmar people. There is definitely good potential for growth in Myanmar, especially Than Lyin COC and Hwambi COC where Sam is the preacher. Sam is also doing as much as he can to spread the NT teachings and to train preachers on NT teachings from the Bible.
